CHM 27202 - Organic Chemistry Laboratory II Using a microscale approach, more advanced techniques of synthesis, separation, and analysis are introduced, including refractometry, gas chromatography, and spectroscopy. Data collection and interpretation, keeping a lab notebook, and writing formal lab reports are also stressed. The literature of organic chemistry is also introduced via a literature search project, which utilizes library and computer resources. Unknown organic compounds are assigned and the student is responsible - by observing physical properties, performing qualitative tests, making derivatives, and interpreting spectra - for determining the identity of these compounds. In addition, a multi-step synthesis is performed and the products are analyzed.
