NUR 12706 - Med/Surg I This course introduces nursing students to the roles and responsibilities of the associate degree registered nurse in caring for adult patients across various healthcare settings. The medical-surgical theory component focuses on providing nursing care to adult patients with conditions related to stress adaptations, acid-base balance, fluid and electrolytes, integumentary, immune, musculoskeletal, sensory, ENT, and pre, intra-, and postoperative care. Consideration is given to teaching-learning principles, health literacy, and the evaluation of learning needs, along with primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention strategies. Students will explore etiology, clinical management, and nursing interventions for various acute and chronic conditions, integrating concepts such as comfort measures, psychosocial support, and family-centered care. The course incorporates health promotion, illness prevention strategies, and patient education. Throughout the course, students will continue to apply the nursing process, Clinical Judgment Measurement Model (CJMM), communication and collaboration skills, use of technology, teaching-learning strategies, and legal and ethical principles supported by evidence-based practice. The clinical component provides students with hands-on experience in acute care settings, where they will develop nursing skills such as wound care, medication administration (non-parenteral, injections, IVs), establishing and maintaining sterile fields, and managing catheters and nasogastric tubes. Students will integrate theory with practice to deliver safe, patient-centered care.
