ESL 14103 - Advanced Skills in English This is an advanced English course for non-native speakers of English. It focuses on reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills. In this course students continue to practice reading and writing strategies to help them understand more authentic, complex, and longer academic texts. They practice writing timed responses, a summary reaction, and a research-based argumentative essay. They also listen to videos and other aural materials about varied academic and non-academic topics; they discuss these topics and make a formal presentation about an academic topic related to their major. These assignments provide less scaffolding as the semester progresses since one of the main objectives of this course is to make students more autonomous and responsible learners. By taking this course, students become progressively more successful in their courses.
Offered: Fall, Spring
Semester Hours: 3 Prerequisite(s): ESL 13103 with a grade of B or better or placement by ESL Director.
