ESL 21102 - Academic Studies ESL 21102 is an advanced course for non-native speakers of English. It focuses on reading strategies, student-text interaction, and student presentations and discussions about the texts used in the class. The main objective of this course is to promote opportunities for international students to better understand and be able to talk about academic topics. The materials for this course are long academic texts used in several of Rio’s courses such as Introduction to Business, Sociology, General Psychology, Fine Arts, etc. Students will identify text organization, study content-specific vocabulary, identify main ideas and details, summarize, and react to the text. They will also make short presentations or participate in discussions about the text they read during class. In this class, students will use a framework and apply it to several reading materials to get used to reading long passages, understanding them, and talking about them. This framework is in the syllabus. All assignments will be submitted to Canvas following MLA format.
Semester Hours: 2 Prerequisite(s): ESL students must be taking ESL 11103 or be placed in this course by the ESL Director.
